IVACS Visiting Researcher from University of Duisburg-Essen
Kathrin Luckmann de Lopez, based at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, has been awarded a short-term research scholarship for PhD candidates (Forschungsstipendium fuer Doktoranden) from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to conduct research into the Limerick Corpus of Irish English (LCIE), at the IVACS Research Centre. Her project is an inter-varietal corpus-based study of clause-final pragmatic markers. She is interested in if and how final markers such as like, man, but, now, so, etc. may be used with different frequencies and fulfil different pragmatic functions in English English, Irish English and Scottish English.
Using the IVACS corpus, the Limerick Corpus of Irish English will help her gain a better understanding of context-specific uses of these markers. LCIE is a one-million word collection of spoken Irish English, mostly containing casual conversations and thus providing a rich resource for the study of real spoken Irish English in casual conversations. Kathrin is the second PhD student to gain a visiting researcher scholarship from the DAAD to undertake research within the IVACS research centre.
